The dish

Mangonada is the Mexican-childhood-summer in a glass. Cubed fresh mango, swirled with chamoy (a sweet-sour-spicy sauce of pickled fruit + chiles), finished with Tajín (the Mexican chile-lime salt), shaved ice, lime, and sometimes a chamoy-coated tamarind straw to drink it through.

Sharp, sweet, hot, cold. Eaten with a long spoon and the straw.

Why we make it this way

Most “mangonada” in Dubai is mango ice cream with a drizzle of generic strawberry sauce. Ours isn’t. We make the chamoy in-house weekly (apricot, hibiscus, ancho chile, lime, sugar — slow-reduced); the mango is real fresh mango cubed to order; the Tajín is the proper Mexican import.

House rule

Eat it fast or it melts and the chamoy thins out. The straw is for catching the chamoy that pools at the bottom — it’s the best part.
